The AJC Everyday Heroes: Esther Kim
About the story:
This piece of writing was the result of a collaborative effort with Julianna Russ during our participation in the Covering Poverty Institute within Grady. Notably, we had the privilege of profiling Esther Kim, a distinguished individual who has made remarkable contributions to society through her involvement with the backpack project. Esther's personal background and experiences seamlessly intertwined with her current endeavors, which made for a compelling and organic narrative. It was a tremendous honor for our work to be featured in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's prestigious "Everyday Heroes" series. Being associated with such a renowned news outlet was a tremendous source of pride, and this project undoubtedly stands out as one of the most noteworthy collaborations I have ever been a part of.
How One Clothing Closet Seeks to Ease Financial Burden For Students
About the story:
I was approached by a distinguished professor to craft a compelling narrative on the University of Georgia's very own clothing closet - a topic that is both niche and essential, addressing an often-overlooked issue. The research process proved enlightening as it brought to light the significant financial burden that arises from purchasing suitable attire for interviews - a consideration that had not previously crossed my mind. The diverse array of sources that I had the opportunity to engage with, including students, faculty, and the clothing closet's director, ensured a comprehensive and insightful account. This being my inaugural individual publication, I found the experience to be incredibly fulfilling. Despite a tight deadline, I was able to complete the project efficiently, avoiding procrastination and ensuring a polished final product. Overall, I believe that the piece is a well crafted exposé on the University of Georgia's clothing closet and its impact on students.
The Oglethorpe Echo

About the story:
This marked my debut for the Oglethorpe Echo, and I must say it proved to be an exhilarating experience. Initially assigned to cover the agriculture and environmental beat, I must confess, I was slightly hesitant about the prospect. However, as I delved deeper, I uncovered numerous opportunities brimming in Oglethorpe County. While documenting the Feral Hog situation, I realized how little I knew about the subject, yet it proved to be remarkably captivating. As I penned my thoughts, I felt like a self-taught student of the subject. The response to the story has been overwhelming, and it has instilled in me the desire to work on a more comprehensive piece on the matter. The fact that my article made it to the front page of the Echo, served as both an acknowledgment of my work and a catalyst to strive towards maintaining the same level of quality.
About the Story:
Undoubtedly, this is the most extensively researched and well-documented story that I have authored. Through thorough investigative journalism, I was able to gain insight from a myriad of credible sources, including representatives from the local and state government, an authoritative expert on the topic, and a local individual who had experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of sludge. Although initially intended to be a concise 400-word piece, the story ultimately expanded to over 800 words, a testament to my comprehensive and exhaustive reporting on this piece. The diligent pursuit of information, coupled with diligent interviewing practices, made the story an effortless undertaking. This experience highlighted the importance of avoiding procrastination and prioritizing tasks, allowing me to produce a story of exceptional depth and relevance to the community of Oglethorpe county, which further motivated me to emphasize the gravity of the issue at hand.

About the story:
This article serves as a follow-up to my previous publication, which had gained considerable traction among our audience at The Echo. One highlight of this story was securing a one-hour interview with a State Representative, which allowed me to embody the role of a serious and competent journalist. Despite the Representative's wariness regarding the repercussions of his statements, I was able to elicit insightful information through thorough questioning without overstepping any boundaries. Additionally, this article entailed an in-depth analysis of a pertinent piece of legislation - a gratifying and enriching experience, given my aspiration to become a lawyer. My ability to clearly and concisely explain the bill to the citizens of Oglethorpe County summed up goal with this story nicely.
